In Sardinia there are 17 DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata, 15 IG – Indicazione Geografica Tipica and 1 DOCG – Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita.
The mark Denominazione di Origine Controllata – DOC, is a quality recognition given to wines produced in limited areas, usually of small to medium size, bearing their geographical name. In most cases the name of the grape variety follows that of the DOC, for example Cannonau di Sardegna DOC.
The Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita – DOCG ( Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin ) mark is a recognition of quality merit given to certain DOC wines of national and international renown. In order to obtain the DOCG mark, wines are subject to stricter controls, the containers in which they can be marketed must be less than 5 liters, and they must bear a mark guaranteeing the origin and allowing the numbering of the bottles produced. In Sardinia, only Vermentino di Gallura can bear the DOCG mark.
The IGT – Indicazione Geografica Tipica (Typical Geographical Indication ) label is a quality recognition given to wines usually produced in larger territorial areas and with less restrictive production regulations. The label of IGT wines may mention the grape variety from which the wine is made.
In 2010 following the reform of the Common Market Organization for Wine DOC and IGT fall under the more generic PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Indication of Origin) label.
