Mandrolisai’ DOC wine is made from grapes from three indigenous grape varieties that grow in the area’s vineyards. These grape varieties are Bovale Sardo, Cannonau and Monica. Bovale Sardo, also called ‘Muristellu’ locally, is an indigenous grape variety that forms the main basis of Mandrolisai.
Each grape variety brings unique oenological characteristics to Mandrolisai wine.
Bovale Sardo is distinguished by its very high polyphenol content, which gives the wine a dark colour, tannicity, olfactory intensity and hints of red fruits with spicy notes. Cannonau, similar to the French Grenache, is considered the most widespread grape variety in Sardinia. Recent studies have demonstrated its endemicity, and remains of grape seeds dating back 3200 years have been found in several archaeological sites on the island, giving it the title of the oldest wine in the Mediterranean basin.
Cannonau is distinguished by its finesse in taste and aroma, contributing to the unique character of Mandrolisai. Finally, Monica is one of the oldest Sardinian vines, introduced to the island in the 11th century by Camaldolese monks. The name ‘Monica’ comes from the monks who began cultivating it in the land surrounding their convents. The Monica gives the wine a delicate taste, contributing with adequate doses to make Mandrolisai soft on the palate, with aromas of blackberry, cherry, red fruit jam and nuances of almond.
The Mandrolisai DOC vineyards are generally located in hilly, sunny and well-exposed terrain, with optimal temperatures and good temperature ranges. These environmental conditions are ideal for the production of grapes that give rise to identity wines with a characteristic originality and quality. Mandrolisai wines range in colour from deep red to garnet, expressing character, strength and, at the same time, a smooth and elegant harmony of taste.
The quality of the ‘Mandrolisai’ DOC wine is the result of the combination of the environmental and soil vocation of the area, the merits of the native vines, the application of appropriate cultivation and oenological techniques and the favourable climate. The interaction between the environment and man in this region has led to the specialisation of vine cultivation, resulting in quality products that have handed down traditional cultivation and winemaking techniques to the present day. Thanks to scientific and technological advances, levels of excellence have been reached, resulting in the extraordinary ‘Mandrolisai’ DOC wines.
These wines are perfect to enjoy in the company of friends and family, or to give as a gift to someone who loves good wine. They are also ideal to accompany typical Sardinian dishes, such as fregola, culurgiones with red meat, mature Sardinian pecorino cheese and traditional Sardinian cold cuts.
